Summer means it’s time for outdoor barbecues, live music, and celebration surrounded by family and friends, and Mid-Michigan cities are no exception to these events. Here are five festivals and summer events taking place right in the heart of Michigan.

The Board of Water & Light Chili Cook-Off “Chiliwood”
June 5, 2015 in Lansing, Michigan

They bring the spice, residents bring the taste buds. Local Lansing, Michigan non-profits, restaurants and organizations will be dishing out a variety of chili recipes from mild to spicy at the Adado Riverfront Park. Lansing’s BWL organization hosts this event each summer and brings in hundreds of people from all around to test all kinds of chili recipes. With live music as a backdrop, vendors and merchandise tents galore and a chili dog eating contest, “Chiliwood” is for those with brave taste buds and iron stomachs.

Yankee Doodle Days
June 18 – June 21, 2015 in Grand Ledge, Michigan
This is a four-day festival for families and friends, sponsored by the Grand Ledge Chamber of Commerce. The Annual Yankee Doodle Days takes place every third weekend of June with an annual parade at 11 a.m. on Saturday. The event is known for its live music and festive activities like cakewalk contests, face painting for kids, a dunk tank, floor hockey and a lot more.

Lansing Beer Fest
June 27, 2015 in Lansing, Michigan

For all you beer drinkers, this annual outdoor beer festival in REO Town in downtown Lansing right on Washington Avenue features 30 of Michigan’s most well-known breweries and more than 100 craft beers. And to wash down the beer, the festival also features a food truck court and plenty of vendors. And of course, what’s beer without some good live music? The event is rain or shine.

Annual Calhoun County Fair
August 16 – August 22, 2015 in Marshall, Michigan
Michigan’s oldest county fair is a historical event and a gathering place for community members every August. Campers are welcome and there will be plenty of vendors with food, arts and crafts. With carnival rides and activities for the kids, this fair is your classic county fair that’s sure to be a hit of the summer in Mid-Michigan.

Annual Ox Roast
August 20 – August 22, 2015 in DeWitt, Michigan

DeWitt’s Annual Ox Roast is your typical small town festival with arts and crafts vendors, music, great food, a parade and fireworks to top it off. The three day-long event is all about community and bringing people together. With a car show and plenty of activities for children from rock climbing to bingo, the small town festival is charming and perfect for families in the summer.
